Day 5 - Rothenburg ob der Tauber
Guten Morgen from Germany!
Today's adventures took us to Rothenburg ob der Tauber. In March 1945, forty percent of the walled medieval town was destroyed by allied air bombardment. After the war, it was faithfully rebuilt with donations coming in from all over the world. We learned how it escaped even greater destruction because the mother of the U.S. Assistant Secretary of War had visited in the early 1900s. As a boy, he developed a fondness for the town based on his mother's stories and a painting of Rothenburg that hung in their home. The German soldiers were given the opportunity to leave and surrender the town. They accepted and Rothenburg was spared. We stayed in a lovely hotel just inside the city walls. There were even books to read in the nightstand if you are fluent in German. Mike's German wasn't that fluent. Das ist aber schade.
Saint Jakob’s Church
This church (also known as the Church of St. James) is on the medieval pilgrimage route to St. James Church in Santiago de Compostela, Spain. Upstairs it has the most impressive Holy Blood Altarpiece (~1500) by woodcarver Tilman Riemenschneider featuring the last supper with Judas at the center. The high gothic main altar known as the Twelve Apostles Altar was carved by Swabian craftsmen in 1466 while the paintings are by Friedrich Herlin. The Maria Altar dated to around 1520 is by unknown artists but often attributed to followers of Riemenschneider.
Reichsküchenmeister
We had a lot of free time to wander around the town. That's why we had so many steps. Just walking the town walls accounted for most of them! We stopped to eat at Reichsküchenmeister and Jen was thrilled to get some white asparagus.
Waffenkammer & Night Watchman's Tour
And for a fun little stop, near the town center there is a shop called Waffenkammer. They had suits of armor and swords and all kinds of fun things you can buy. Mike resisted the temptation to splurge and we limited our purchases to a couple bottle toppers and magnets. We then met up with our group and joined the public night watchman's tour with the incomparable Hans Georg Baumgartner. His theatrical presentation of the history of the town was very fun and informative laced heavily with wry humor... WHAT A TREAT, HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
