Rick Steves' Best of Europe in 21 Days - Spring 2024
Postcards from Mike & Jen

Day 15 - Cinque Terre
Buongiorno from Italy!
Ferry & Lunch in Riomaggiore
Today's adventures were all on our own. We decided we to take the ferry boat down the coast and the train back. We bought our one-way tickets, hopped on the ferry, and headed for the upper deck for the best views. We are not sure if we miscounted the stops or were hypnotized by the scenery, but whoops, we missed getting off at our stop of Riomaggiore. No worries, we continued on to Portovenere, where we purchased a 1-stop ticket and headed back to our intended destination.
Once we made it to Riomaggiore we were more than ready for lunch. So out came the Rick Steves guidebook pages and we chose a restaurant from the recommendations. La Grotta did not disappoint, both the food and atmosphere were fantastic.
Monterosso al Mare
After lunch we did a some walking around, but the hills were steep and we were on day 15 of what we had affectionately begun to call Matti's fat camp. (Seriously, Mike and Jen each lost 10 pounds by the end of the tour! And you may have noticed, we did not skip desserts.) Gordy and Dawn continued exploring, but we decided to take the train back for a closer look at the sites in Monterosso, including the statues of the Giant and Saint Francis. Jen cannot resist a beach and did a little wading in the extra brisk water. Finally, we stopped at Lapo's for a take-away pizza, purchased a bottle of rose prosecco from the grocery store, and ate supper on our patio with our feet up. Nothing but high class for us!
